What a BUSY Summer!

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

I realise it has been ages since I wrote anything here and a lot has been happening.  Here are some of the things that happened over the summer!

Trip to Lewis

In July, we took a group of youths to the Isle of Lewis, for some their first trip out of Govan. Christine and Marjorie MacDonald kindly provided the transport of a minibus  We stayed in the Scaradale Outdoor Centre. We had a great time kayaking, mountain biking, fishing and gorge walking. We had a great football match with local youths.

A big ‘thank-you’ to Rev. Willie Black and the folk of the High Church in Stornoway for all the did for us, including a marvellous Sunday lunch, and enough home baking to feed an army for a month – we even brought some back for the folk in Govan .

We went to the Sunday Service in Stornoway and the lads had ‘combed over’ their hair so well with hair gel, that one lady in the congregation commented they looked like choir boys.  Aye!  They wouldny be saying that if they saw them at 4 in the morning! They had about 10 hours sleep through the whole week so returned very tired but happy.

Kayaking at Stornoway

I am glad to say the behaviour and attitude of the lads was really changed by the trip, and the week away was a great time of building good relationships with them. It was a fantastic week!

Gone fishing!

Every Wednesday 2 leaders from Preshal go with 5 clients from the centre on fishing trips, one week to fresh water and the next to the sea. One of them, Jamie, was delighted to catch 2 mackerel on his first trip, and is now hooked on fishing, and hasn’t missed a day over the past 5 months.

On the 25th August, Jimmie caught the biggest summer cod (51b) caught in the past 10 years, off the Gourock pier. He decided to return it to the water to let it live a bit longer. But it doesn’t matter what size of fish they catch – or if they catch anything at all – they all have a great time.

Training weekend

All the youth leaders, with me as cook, headed off to N Ireland recently for a weekend of training and team building. The fare and transport were kindly provided by Brian and Betty Soutar of Stagecoach and they stayed in a Youth Hostel. It was a real success and everyone enjoyed it. We all came back ‘raring to go!’ .

Speaking engagements

I have been really busy running up and down the country speaking about Preshal. These have gone great. Pray that I’ll keep well!

Special request for prayer

I’m going to be speaking in the Scottish Parliament on 6th October.  Pray about that!

Would you believe it?  I’m going for my first real holiday in 25 years soon – a Mediterranean cruise! I’ve begged, borrowed and ‘stolen’ fancy frocks for it. I feel I really need a good holiday and who knows who I might meet and get a chance to talk about Preshal.  I’ll take some of my books.  Pray that I’ll meet the ‘Secret Millionaire’ and get help with our new building!
